Coronation Street fans are predicting a heartbreaking new storyline for Todd Grimshaw, suggesting the character could be heading for an alcohol addiction after his traumatic abuse ordeal with Theo Silverton.
Todd, now played by Gareth Pierce, has been a fixture on the ITV soap since his debut in 2001. Over the past 12 months, he has been at the centre of a harrowing storyline exploring abuse in a same-sex partnership. His boyfriend Theo (James Cartwright) manipulated and controlled every aspect of Todd's life.
Theo's murder and aftermath
In April, Theo was murdered after his reign of terror over Todd was exposed, sparking a major whodunnit. It was eventually revealed that Todd's best friend Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) killed Theo, attacking him with a metal pole on scaffolding and sending him falling to the ground. Sarah then enlisted former flame Gary Windass (Mikey North) to help cover up the crime.
Despite attempts by copper boyfriend Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) to help Sarah evade justice, she was arrested on suspicion of killing Theo and has since been sent to prison. In recent weeks, Todd has been seen spiralling and struggling in the aftermath of these events.
Todd's destructive behaviour
Todd visited his mum Eileen (Sue Grimshaw) in Thailand but recently returned to the street. Since then, he has been partying heavily, turning to drink to cope with his turmoil. He has also been sleeping with strangers, and last week ended up sleeping with Fraser (Chris Grahamson), despite knowing Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) was falling for him, thinking he was straight. After discovering this, Glenda was devastated and the pair have since had a falling out.
Now, fans are predicting more drama and heartbreak for Todd. On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one person said: "I can definitely see a Todd alcoholic storyline coming soon." Another added: "I thought that too." A third chimed in: "Has Todd not been through enough with the whole Theo saga." Another declared: "It's going to be like Billy's alcohol storyline," referring to Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank).
Echoing their thoughts, a fifth said: "They are definitely going down a self-destructive path for Todd. He's drinking too much and having random sex. And now being snappy at people who care." Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
