The Chase's newest chaser, Darragh Ennis, has broken a Guinness World Record with his debut episode drawing 4.9 million viewers, the largest audience for any daytime show this year excluding news, coronavirus briefings and sport.
The record-breaking episode aired on Thursday, surpassing the previous all-time high for the show set just a day earlier as anticipation built for Ennis's first appearance. Both Wednesday and Thursday's episodes attracted over a third of all TV viewers in their timeslot.
Ennis, who previously appeared as a contestant on the show in 2017, joins the line-up of chasers after failing to win prize money with his team against Paul Sinha. He has been given the nickname 'The Menace' by host Bradley Walsh.
Speaking about his new role, Ennis said: 'I'm so pleased to be the sixth Chaser. It's brilliant to be on such an amazing quiz team, and so much fun working with Bradley Walsh. It's such an exciting opportunity and I can't wait to take on more contestants!'
Bradley Walsh added: 'Another Chaser? ANOTHER CHASER? That's another person cleverer than me on The Chase. I must have words with the producers. But I can't wait to educate Darragh on the important things in life; custard creams, cowboy films and real ale.'
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
