Carcass Clad: tank combat with tension, terror and laughs

Swedish indie developer Wrong Organ has announced Carcass Clad, a co-op tank combat game with a supernatural twist, following the success of its space horror Mouthwashing. The game places players in the stifling crew compartment of a heavily armoured tank, navigating the crumbling remains of a city in enemy territory.

From Script to Gameplay

While Mouthwashing focused on storytelling, Carcass Clad is gameplay-driven. “In Mouthwashing, every single thing we were doing was about trying to make that script come to life in any way possible,” says Jeffrey Tomec, gameplay lead. “Every gameplay sequence, everything you do at every point is just there to make that story hit. And Carcass Clad is fundamentally not that kind of game. This is a gameplay-driven experience.”

Players choose roles as gunner, driver, or commander, each with urgent competing priorities. “You’re surrounded by this awesome but scary machinery,” says technical designer Dave van Egdom. “It should feel as though you might lose a finger if you put your hand in the wrong place.” Mistakes can cascade, affecting the entire crew.

Supernatural Adversaries

The crew is pursued through the city of Vhorgorod by the Green Lions, the last remnants of the city’s defenders. Inspired by Battlefield V’s Tiger tank mission, the Green Lions have “unleashed something on the city,” according to Tomec, leading to strange growths of flesh and gold. Their tanks are covered in living armour that moos and bleeds.

Despite the grim setting, Carcass Clad is a co-op game, which brings moments of levity. “When you’re designing a co-op game, you’re trying to take into account the fact that every co-op game is inherently a silly game,” says Tomec. “We want – both narratively and at the gameplay level – the feeling that you’re a team fighting against these very oppressive odds, coming together and still finding revelry and enjoyment in being able to overcome something that is pretty miserable.”

Carcass Clad is in development for PC.
