Early footage of a cancelled Star Wars video game, codenamed Star Wars Magellan, has surfaced online. The multiplayer action roleplaying game was in development at Zynga subsidiaries Echtra Games and NaturalMotion, but was abandoned due to a strategic realignment within Zynga and Take-Two Interactive.
Development and cancellation
Magellan entered development in 2021 after Echtra Games was bought out by Zynga. It was never explicitly described as a Star Wars game, only announced as a cross-platform roleplaying game. The project was ultimately cancelled last year, and Echtra Games was shut down in 2025, having not released a new game in its four years under Zynga ownership.
The footage was shared by MP1st, which obtained it from the personal portfolio of a former Echtra Games staff member, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons. The game was in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Gameplay details
The footage shows two playable characters: a Mandalorian with twin blasters and a jetpack, and a Twi'lek Jedi wielding a green lightsaber and a blaster. The pair battle hordes of enemies, including Stormtroopers, indicating a setting during the original trilogy. The gameplay resembles a looter shooter, with loot chests and the text 'shoot and loot' appearing in the footage.
It is unclear if Magellan's cancellation was related to another Zynga Star Wars game, the free-to-play arena shooter Star Wars: Hunters, which launched in June 2024 but was shut down nine months later due to poor performance.
Despite the cancellation, Star Wars fans have upcoming releases to look forward to, including Star Wars Zero Company later this month and Star Wars: Galactic Racer in October, as well as a third Star Wars Jedi game.
