Boomtown Fair 2026 delivered its most ambitious chapter yet, bringing together 12 supersonic stages, more than 50 hidden venues and thousands of interactive performers for 77,000 attendees at the Matterley Bowl near Winchester.
The festival blended music with immersive theatre, featuring caged performers telling tales ranging from the absurd to the political, while actors interacted with crowds across medieval and dystopian cityscapes. Attendees also took part in a community scheme using cards handed out to reward spontaneous acts of community, environmental protection or kindness, tracking how far each card travelled to measure connections within the festival community.
Main stage returns with monumental amphitheatre
The Lion's Den main stage made a monumental return with a 28m-tall and 90m-wide amphitheatre. Madness opened the stage to a huge crowd and did not disappoint, while Shaggy also appeared on the Lion's Den stage. Belfast hip-hop trio Kneecap delivered an electrifying debut performance before 50,000 fans, bringing non-stop energy with their explosive mix of Gaelic and English lyrics.
Most of the music at Boomtown is electronic, with drum'n'bass, UK garage, dubstep and bass from superstar producers and deejays such as Chase & Status and Andy C. However, this year more mainstream acts including Scissor Sisters, Madness and Shaggy attracted an older crowd, which filled the boutique camping offered by Camp Skylark.
Zero-emission stage and festival close
The festival scaled up on sustainability with the introduction of the new HYDRO XL stage, powered entirely by green hydrogen fuel cells with zero emissions. The multistorey stage featured sheet lasers, projection mapping and sci-fi screens, with Skrillex and Four Tet among those delivering sets that blew attendees away.
Faithless closed the festival at the Lion's Den with a gladiatorial set that included a nod to departed singer Maxi Jazz. Multiple witnesses believed it was the best stage sound system they had ever witnessed, a view the review agreed with unanimously.
The closing ceremony followed with serious messaging, excoriating Elon Musk for monetising space after destroying the planet, before building up to a display of pyrotechnics, drones and lasers soundtracked by epic electronica.
After the festival, every reveller receives a bespoke aftermovie called Unboxed, which captures their unique experiences around the festival site. The festival is expected to sell out fast for its next chapter in 2027.
