Black Ops PS5 Sales Surge, Halo Lags Behind

Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 ports have sold millions on PlayStation 5, according to new estimates, while Halo: Campaign Evolved has struggled. Alinea Analytics reports that the Black Ops ports sold 3 million and 8.2 million copies respectively across PlayStation consoles in July, topping the PlayStation Store best sellers list worldwide. In contrast, Halo: Campaign Evolved sold just 351,000 copies on PS5 in July, lagging behind titles like Minecraft, Palworld, and GTA 5.

Black Ops Ports Exceed Expectations

For context, 2012's Black Ops 2 sold 7.5 million copies within its launch month in the US, so it's remarkable to see it replicating similar numbers if these estimates are accurate, especially given the ports are considered low-effort with barely any improvements. The nostalgia around Black Ops seems to be driving these sales, which may encourage Microsoft to release more Call of Duty ports on Sony's console, or even lead to proper remasters or remakes for both games.

These successes are supported by new PlayStation sales estimates from Alinea Analytics, which also show Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced sold 1.7 million on PS5, making it the third best-selling game on the system in July. This figure is slightly lower than Ubisoft's reported 3.5 million across all platforms.

Halo's Slow Start on PlayStation

Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on July 28, but its performance has been lackluster. Alinea estimates indicate the remake sold 452,000 copies on PS5 to date, and 212,000 copies on Steam, with around 900,000 on Xbox (across console and PC). For comparison, Forza Horizon 5 has sold over 5 million copies on PS5, showing that Xbox games can perform well on Sony's platform.

The game's all-time concurrent player peak on Steam is just 25,376, and only 1% of the total PS5 install base booted it up on launch day, according to Circana's player engagement tracker. These metrics suggest Halo is not taking off like Forza Horizon 5, which may reflect the franchise's position in 2026 and the lack of competitive multiplayer in Halo: Campaign Evolved.

Implications for Future Halo Games

It remains to be seen if this poor performance will lead to future Halo games becoming Xbox exclusives again, like Gears Of War: E-Day, but it isn't a promising start for the series' future on PlayStation. A better picture of Halo: Campaign Evolved's sales will emerge in the coming weeks, but all signs currently point to underwhelming results.
