The BBC's new six-part series Hercule, based on Agatha Christie's iconic detective, is set to film in Liverpool, with Edward Bluemel taking on the role of Hercule Poirot. The cast includes Tamsin Greig, James Nesbitt, and Mawaan Rizwan.
Liverpool's growing role as a production hub
Liverpool has become a major production hub, now the second most filmed city in the UK outside London. Blockbusters like The Batman and shows like Peaky Blinders have used its unique architecture. Recent successes set in the city include This City Is Ours, The Cage, and The Responder.
Cast and creative team revealed
Joining Bluemel are Tamsin Greig, James Nesbitt, Mawaan Rizwan, Henry Ashton, James D'Arcy, Calvin Demba, Phil Dunning, Jack Gleeson, Guy Remmers, and Rebecca Rittenhouse. The series will explore Poirot's early years, drawing on three of Christie's stories. It is written by Benji Walters, with Jonny Campbell directing the first two episodes.
The Poirot novels have sold over 750 million copies since 1920. Previous actors include David Suchet, Peter Ustinov, and Kenneth Branagh.
Production and broadcast details
Bluemel said: "I feel very lucky to have been trusted with such an iconic character who has been played by so many great actors. I can't wait to continue Hercule's legacy." Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, added: "Hercule Poirot is one of the greatest and most loved characters of all time, and bringing him back to the BBC is a real privilege."
The show is produced by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Ltd for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, with BritBox in North America in 2027. James Prichard, executive producer for Agatha Christie Limited, said: "My father had the privilege of working with David Suchet for nearly 25 years, and I now have the good fortune of being able to share my great grandmother’s brilliant stories with a new generation of viewers."
