Ann Droid has come to an end after a run of six episodes on BBC One. The final episode aired on Friday, August 21, and the comedy series, created by Diane Morgan and Sarah Kendal, has been replaced in its prime-time Friday slot.
Mrs Brown's Boys repeats take over the slot
Viewers can still watch series one of Ann Droid on BBC iPlayer, but the Friday 9.30pm slot will now be filled by repeats of Mrs Brown's Boys. The Radio Times has listed that series three will be repeated, with episode one showing on Friday, August 28 at 9.30pm.
This comes after it was revealed that the Christmas specials of Mrs Brown's Boys have been cancelled, as Brendan O'Carroll, the star and creator of the sitcom, needs an operation on a broken jaw.
A synopsis for the repeated episode reads: "A hypnotist is booked to provide the entertainment at the triplets' baptism - and Agnes soon finds herself under his spell. Meanwhile, the matriarch's kitchen is falling apart - but that turns out to be the least of her problems when son Mark delivers some heartbreaking news."
Fans call for a second series
Within minutes of the Ann Droid finale ending, fans took to social media platform X - formerly Twitter - to ask for a second series. One person wrote: "#anndroid is one of the best comedies the BBC has done in years. Dianne Morgan and Sue Johnson are brilliant. Can't wait for series two. So funny and heartwarming."
The sitcom stars Brookside and The Royle Family legend Sue Johnston as lonely widower Sue. Concerned about her health and well-being, her son Michael (Paul Ready) decides to get her an AI eldercare robot, much to her annoyance. Giving the robot, whom she calls Linda (Diane Morgan), a trial run, things do not go smoothly, with viewers seeing the robot walk in on her in the bath and ruin her dressing gown.
After the debut episode aired last month, viewers shared similar praise. One person said: "#AnnDroid Funny, sad, incisive. Diane Morgan and Sue Johnson are brilliant. SueSueSue is a winner." Someone else added: "#AnnDroid is my new favourite telly show."
Another viewer wrote: "Just watched the first episode of #anndroid by @Sarah_Kendall and Diane Morgan, and it is a great piece of writing and acting. Deserves to be a hit with viewers #suesuesue." One fan commented: "Ann Droid is sharp, witty and gorgeously funny. Sue Johnston is brilliant as per, and if you're a fan of Diane Morgan, it's a real treat #AnnDroid @BBCOne."
Ann Droid series one is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
