Bautista in talks to play Kratos in God of War show

Amazon is reportedly in talks with Dave Bautista to take over the role of Kratos in its live-action God of War TV show, following Ryan Hurst's injury-forced exit. The news has sparked a largely positive reaction from fans online.

Recast after injury

Ryan Hurst, known for Sons of Anarchy, had filmed four episodes as Kratos before injuring himself on set last month. The production now plans to recast the role and reshoot his scenes with the new actor.

According to a report by Variety, Bautista is in discussions with Amazon, though representatives declined to comment. The actor already has a relationship with the company, having starred in Amazon originals like The Wrecking Crew and the upcoming Highlander reboot.

Fan reactions

Online sentiment appears largely in favor of the potential casting. On Bluesky, The Serfs called it 'a fantastic casting choice,' while Hellrazor Ramon said it's 'the most obvious casting move of all-time.' Clifford Bateau noted that a 2022 Guardians of the Galaxy special already joked about Drax being mistaken for the god of war.

On the God of War subreddit, GameOfEnder6312 praised Bautista's 'size, strength and intensity,' and DivinityPen called him 'a great actor who knows how to give 100% to a role.' Some fans, like Lord_NOX75, expressed sympathy for Hurst but acknowledged Bautista's potential.

However, a few raised concerns about Bautista's health, as he has slimmed down since his wrestling days and, at 57, might struggle to bulk up again for the physically demanding role.

Bautista's gaming ties

While Bautista hasn't had many video game roles beyond WWE games, he has shown interest in a Gears of War movie and lent his likeness to a Gears 5 skin. His Greek heritage may also add appeal.

Despite fan enthusiasm, some remain skeptical about how any actor will look as Kratos, given the character's exaggerated design. Hurst's brief appearance was widely mocked as resembling bad cosplay. Kratos, originally nearly eight feet tall, was later reduced to six foot four for realism, according to developer Santa Monica.
