Nancy Cartwright, who has voiced Bart Simpson since 1987, believes The Simpsons could end sooner than many expect. In a recent interview on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, she suggested the show might conclude at season 40.
Cartwright's Prediction
When asked how long she thinks the show will continue, Cartwright replied, '40 [seasons].' When Rosenbaum confirmed if she really believed it would stop at season 40, she said, 'Yeah.' After further questioning, she clarified, 'It's my opinion.'
If her prediction holds, the series would end around spring 2029. However, Cartwright expressed she is happy to keep voicing Bart if showrunners want to continue. Asked if she would carry on, she said, 'Yeah, we'll keep going then.' When asked if she would continue as long as producers wanted, she added, 'Absolutely.'
Show's Future and Parody
Showrunner Matt Selman has previously indicated he doesn't expect a major emotional finale. The show already parodied a series finale in the season 36 premiere, 'Bart's Birthday,' which Selman described as 'a series finale in the middle of the show that made fun of all the ideas of wrapping everything up or ending.'
The Simpsons has been renewed through season 40, guaranteeing new episodes until the 2028-29 broadcast season. Earlier this year, the show retired Duffman 'forever' in a Severance-style episode titled 'Seperance.'
Next up is a second movie, due in cinemas next year, nearly 20 years after the first film, which earned over $536 million worldwide.
