Sacha Baron Cohen's London rude boy character Ali G is back in a new film, Ali G: Who Iz I?, 24 years after his last big-screen outing. The project marks Cohen's directorial debut and is scheduled for release in cinemas on October 23 by Amazon MGM Studios.
From TV satire to big-screen return
Ali G first rose to fame in the early 2000s on Da Ali G Show, where the character conducted satirical interviews with figures including Donald Trump and Jacob Rees-Mogg. In 2002, Cohen starred in Ali G Indahouse before moving on to the documentary-style films Borat and Bruno.
Now, the character returns in a sequel that sees him face a new challenge. The film's official synopsis reads: "After twenty years spent 'chillin', tokin' and bonin'', Ali G is shocked to discover that his long-term girlfriend, Julie, is 8 months pregnant. Faced with an extra mouth to feed, he gets off his batty and heads to America to reclaim his former glory… but soon encounters adversaries who will ultimately threaten his and his child's very existence."
Release details and directorial debut
The synopsis adds: "Sacha Baron Cohen's new film, ALI G: WHO IZ I? marks his directorial debut and will be released in cinemas on October 23 by Amazon MGM Studios."
This marks the first time Cohen has taken the director's chair for a feature film, bringing his most recognisable character back to audiences nearly a quarter of a century after his last solo film.
