The Festival of the Unexceptional (FOTU) returned to Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire for its 12th year, drawing around 4,500 attendees from around the world. The grounds were packed with approximately 2,500 beloved but unremarkable family cars that have largely disappeared from British roads.
Entries must have been manufactured between 25 and 50 years ago, and 50 were chosen to compete for the top prize. This year's judges included Autocar editor-in-chief Steve Cropley, content creator Steph Hoy, motoring journalists Richard Bremner, Jesse Billington, Antony Ingram and Gary Axon, and TV presenter Jon Bentley.
Winners and Highlights
Gordon McNeill took first place with his 2001 Volkswagen Polo E, which has been his only car for 20 years. Despite its battle-scarred paintwork, it has covered 176,000 miles. Second place went to Matt Swinn's rare 1992 Toyota Previa, used to haul his band's equipment. He has kept the van meticulously maintained and even framed the 1990s sweet wrappers and receipts found under the seats. Third place was awarded to Jake Seddon's 2001 Ford Focus, originally his grandfather's and restored by his father. It was displayed with family photos, impressing the judges with its condition and family connection.
Other Notable Entries
Other special mentions included a 1991 Ford P100 TD owned by Jack Duxbury, a 2000 Kia Clarus Wagon owned by Marwin Jansen, a 1986 Citroen Axel owned by Rick Martens, a 1982 Fiat 127 owned by Maia Egan, and a 1994 Honda Civic Bali owned by Emma Rowe.
Festival Atmosphere
Away from the cars, the main stage hosted live music and interviews. The festival is hosted by insurance provider Hagerty. Its managing director, Mark Roper, said: 'Wow. Just when we think the Festival of the Unexceptional can’t get any bigger, it grows again and is more spectacular than ever. ‘What a delight to see the lawns of Grimsthorpe Castle covered with thousands of FOTU cars, being enjoyed by 4,500 people from all around the world. ‘Thanks to each and every person who came for their dedication, passion and support of all things FOTU.'
