The 40-metre enclosed spiral slide at Freight Island in Newcastle officially opens this weekend, after early riders were spotted using it in recent weeks. The slide runs from the top floor down to the ground floor beside the Newgate Street exit and costs £1.50 per ride, with a percentage of every ride going to the venue's charity partner.
New addition to Freight Island complex
Freight Island, the multi-million pound food, drink and entertainment complex in the former Debenhams rooftop space at Eldon Square, welcomed its first guests in June. The venue features a £1 million retractable roof, several bars, local food vendors and its own roof terrace.
The slide was first used by guests during the VIP launch night for Wyld, the complex's own restaurant. It then remained out of action for a few weeks before videos of people riding it appeared on social media last week.
Halloween events and ride details
The slide is suitable for anyone 1.3 metres tall and over. Freight Island is also hosting a busy Halloween weekend, with Rave & Play offering music, circus performances, Halloween crafts and family activities from 1pm to 4pm, followed by the Fright Island Skeleton Ball featuring house music, live performances and immersive visuals from 8pm until late.
