A new documentary titled The Curse of Love Island is now streaming on Prime Video, examining the relentless spotlight and mental health struggles faced by reality TV personalities. The series focuses on three devastating deaths that have shaken the show and its audience.
Documentary Overview
Featuring insights from former participants, industry experts, and close companions, the synopsis states: "Through the stories of former contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, who died by suicide within two years of each other, The Curse of Love Island examines the impact of reality TV fame in the social media age." It adds: "Featuring contributions from fellow contestants, industry insiders and close friends, the series explores the highs and lows of reality TV, media scrutiny, online abuse, mental health and the pressures of life in the public eye."
Malin's Heartache
Malin Andersson featured in Season 2 of the programme in 2016 and was paired with Terry Walsh. After elimination, she watched from home as Terry pursued a romance with newcomer Emma-Jane, leading to her dramatic return to challenge his behaviour. Malin confesses: "I was in something quite toxic in the show looking back now; it wasn't normal. But they thrive off of that because that's golden TV." She endured further heartbreak in 2019 when her baby daughter Consy died at four weeks old.
Zara Stripped of Title
Zara Holland, also from Season 2, entered as reigning Miss Great Britain but was stripped of her crown after being filmed having sex with fellow contestant Alex Bowen. The programme witnessed Zara breaking down in tears, prompting debate over shaming women for their sexual encounters. Sophie Gradon famously addressed the issue during a speech, generating enormous support.
Caroline Flack
Former Love Island host Caroline Flack tragically died by suicide in 2020 at the age of 40. ITV withdrew episodes and issued a statement before the programme returned. Caroline had fronted Love Island from 2015 to 2019, withdrawing after an arrest over an alleged altercation with her then-boyfriend. Tributes continue to pour in.
Mike Thalassitis
Ex-footballer Mike Thalassitis appeared on the show in 2017 and died two years later in 2019 at age 26. A coroner determined the death was suicide following cocaine and alcohol consumption.
Sophie Gradon
Sophie Gradon, Miss Great Britain 2009, appeared on Love Island in 2016. Two years later, she was found dead at her family home. Reports indicated she had consumed drugs and alcohol prior to taking her own life. She was 32.
Paul Danan
Paul Danan featured in the inaugural series of Celebrity Love Island in 2005 and was also known for Hollyoaks and Celebrity Big Brother. He died at age 46 in Bristol; an inquest ruled his death as 'misadventure' after a "cocktail of drugs."
James Barker
James Barker, a Love Island executive producer, died earlier this year at age 40 in Fiji due to an unforeseen medical emergency while filming the eighth series of Love Island USA. A statement read: "James' unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock. He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us."
ITV's Response
Ahead of the documentary, ITV told Prime Video that due to confidentiality they could not comment on individuals' welfare but confirmed their "duty of care procedures have evolved significantly over time." They added: "We have added elements such as language and behaviour training for participants as well as a social media blackout for the duration of their time on the show. Islanders also have contact with welfare producers for a period of 14 months post show."
