The Johnstone Fire Engine Rally is set to return this weekend for the first time in seven years, with details unveiled for the popular event. The exhibition, featuring a town centre parade and display in Houstoun Square, will run from 11am until 4pm on Saturday, August 15.
The rally previously ran from 2014 to 2019, and anticipation is growing in the town for its resurgence and the associated activities.
Councillor highlights family appeal
Councillor Andy Doig, who represents Johnstone North and the surrounding villages, said: "People in the town are definitely looking forward to its return. It was a particular hit with families with younger kids who found the parade really exciting. In addition to that, you had the event at Houstoun Square and that was always excellent as well."
He added: "It's a real day's entertainment and, with the criterium cycling event also in the pipeline for 2027, the council's offer in Johnstone is on the up and up. These are occasions that will bring benefits to the traders, to the retailers and of course to the people of Johnstone."
Parade route and display details
On the day, historic engines will leave from outside Johnstone Fire Station at 11am and make their way through the town centre to Houstoun Square, where they will be on display. From 12noon until 4pm, visitors will have the opportunity to meet the crews, explore the vehicles and learn about the evolution of firefighting across the decades.
The service will also deliver live demonstrations that highlight the importance of fire safety and share practical advice. There will also be activities for children, such as face-painting, as well as a market featuring local traders and a stage programme with various acts.
Council support and budget backing
In May last year, Councillor Doig issued a plea to reinstate Johnstone Fire Engine Rally at a full meeting of Renfrewshire Council. As he presented his motion, it was confirmed the matter was under consideration by the local authority as part of a £150,000 budget investment.
He received the unanimous support of elected members as he asked for recognition of the "success and popularity" of the rally over past years.
