Giants in Liverpool: Eight Years On from the 1.3m Spectacle

It has been eight years since the final act of the 'Giant Spectacular' trilogy transformed Liverpool, an event that mesmerised 1.3 million spectators.

Liverpool Dream and the 2018 Programme

Supported by Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Arts Council England, Merseyside hosted the Giants as part of its 2018 programme, celebrating 10 years of Liverpool's nomination as European Capital of Culture. Liverpool Dream, the third act from Royal de Luxe Giants, took place from October 4 to 7, 2018.

Liverpool fell in love with the Royal de Luxe Giants, so much so that their creator, Jean-Luc Courcoult, was awarded the city's highest civic honour, the Freedom of the City, in the same year. More than a million visitors filled the streets in Liverpool and Wirral as the Giants took over Merseyside.

Final Journey and Surprise Appearance

For their third and final visit to the city, the Giants and their Lilliputians celebrated Liverpool's Dream, taking a 21-mile journey to reunite the Big Giant, Little Boy Giant and Xolo the dog. For the first time in the history of the saga, all four characters were present during the show: the Giant, the Little Boy Giant, the Xolo and the Little Girl Giant, who appeared by surprise on the last day.

As the visit reaches eight years on, the ECHO has taken a look back at its archives to relive the visit once again. From a sleeping Giant on New Brighton beach to a Giant's slipper suspended over Canning Dock, the event transformed the city with its stunning performances that made for incredible pictures from the ECHO photography team.
