Former Victoria's Secret Angels Jasmine Tookes and Josephine Skriver have opened up about the intense effort behind their glamorous runway appearances, with Skriver revealing that even her mother sometimes failed to recognise her in photos.
Speaking on the Real Pod podcast hosted by Victoria Garrick, the models discussed the disconnect between their on-stage personas and real lives. Tookes, 32, said she sees comments daily on Instagram praising her as 'always so put together,' but insisted: 'I'm like, no I'm not! Not even the slightest bit.' She described her real life as walking around with baby spit-up and no makeup.
Skriver, 30, compared the glamorous look to a work uniform, saying: 'Nobody wants to be in their work suit twenty-four seven.' She noted that the Angels underwent three hours of hair and makeup, plus two layers of body makeup, sparkle, and oil, to achieve their polished appearance.
The models also addressed the role of photo editing. Skriver said she could stand next to her own billboard for 30 minutes without being recognised, adding: 'I don't even look like my pictures.' Tookes agreed, calling the difference 'so obvious' when looking back at old campaigns.
On inclusivity, Skriver said that from an insider perspective, Victoria's Secret was more inclusive than high fashion, as they encouraged her not to lose weight when her waist size increased. However, she acknowledged the industry's narrow standards at the time were 'not at all inclusive' by today's standards.
