The Psychology Behind Hair Partings: What Your Style Says About You
They say the eyes are the window to the soul, but have you ever considered what your hair parting reveals about your inner nature? From attention-seeking to creativity and fun, experts believe the way a woman parts her locks can offer profound insights into her personality traits. Psychologist Phil Macleod and celebrity hairdresser Gustav Fouche both assert that this simple grooming choice speaks volumes.
Hollywood's Shift in Parting Trends
The recent Oscars highlighted a notable trend: the Gen-Z-favoured middle parting is no longer chic in 2026. Stars like Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Priyanka Chopra opted for millennial-approved side partings instead. Even Kylie Jenner, born in 1997 and technically Gen Z, flaunted sideswept hair at the 98th Academy Awards in Los Angeles. However, just because Hollywood has switched sides doesn't mean you should blindly follow suit.
According to Gustav and Phil, there are key factors to consider before changing your parting, including face shape, age, and, most importantly, personality. From an 'attention-seeking' strong side part to a 'bossy' bob, your hairstyle communicates more than you might realise.
Softer Side Partings: Friendly and Approachable
Anya Taylor-Joy, star of The Queen's Gambit, recently wore her platinum blonde locks in a soft side parting at a Louvre fundraiser. Mr. MacLeod explained to the Daily Mail that when the parting is less defined and the style is overall softer, the brain interprets the person as more friendly and approachable.
'Others will feel more relaxed or less intimidated to talk to them. The brain will read the person as less intentional as there is no visible line to focus on,' he said. This subtle styling choice can make a significant difference in social interactions.
Shorter or Structured Styles: Intentional and Organised
Zendaya, whose bridal red carpet looks have sparked speculation about a secret marriage to Tom Holland, makes a glamorous case for a side-parted bob. Mr. MacLeod added that shorter hairstyles or cuts make partings more noticeable, dramatically impacting perception.
'The mind will read it as very intentional,' he explained. 'Therefore, the person will come across as more structured, organised, potentially more formal, or even bossy.' Zendaya's sleek bob for her forthcoming film The Drama showcases this power, with Mr. MacLeod noting, 'There is a definite power to this style that does not go unnoticed psychologically.'
Middle Partings: Youthful and Effortless
Margot Robbie's centre parting makes her look more youthful and effortless, while Love Story actress Sarah Pidgeon defied trends at the Oscars with a middle parting. The brain associates symmetry with stability, so a middle parting appears balanced, consistent, and safe, according to the founder of Thought Reader.
'People who wear their hair down the middle come across as controlled, steady, or poised. They are perceived as reliable and familiar by others,' he added. Gustav noted that partings can 'completely shift the vibe,' with centre partings feeling more relaxed, youthful, and effortless.
'If we look at Margot Robbie, her look feels more glamorous, polished, and red-carpet ready with a side parting. When she wears a centre parting, it comes across softer and more “girl next door.”'
Defined Side Partings: Confident and Glamorous
According to Phil, a strong, defined side parting draws attention because it breaks symmetry. 'On a psychological level, anything that stands out tends to be seen as more confident or daring. It says the person wants to be seen, is confident and bold.'
He added that such partings, seen on celebrities, give an impression of wealth, glamour, and high fashion. 'So the person wearing their hair deliberately in this way will do so to fit into that narrative,' he explained, suggesting a clear decision about self-presentation. Gustav concurred, saying side partings add glamour, structure, sophistication, and often a touch of sexiness.
Zigzag Partings: Creative and Unpredictable
Finally, Mr. MacLeod discussed zigzag partings, like those worn by Bella Hadid, which signal an unpredictable streak. 'A zigzag parting shakes things up—it disrupts the order. That is how the brain interprets it,' he clarified.
'The first impressions of a zigzag hair parting signal that person is fun, creative, and expressive. They are not afraid to stand out from the crowd and are confident individuals. People will assume you are unconventional and far from predictable.' This bold choice reflects a personality that embraces uniqueness and creativity.
