Only 2 North East restaurants in UK top 100 list

Just two North East restaurants have made it into the new top 100 list released by the National Restaurant Awards, leaving local food enthusiasts feeling a mix of pride and disappointment.

Pine in Northumberland and Solstice in Newcastle are the only two establishments from the region to feature in the prestigious ranking. While the North East is brimming with exceptional dining spots, only these two managed to secure a spot on the list.

Pine: A bucolic dining experience

Pine finished in an impressive 38th position. The restaurant, which recently hosted Gary Lineker before the Tyne-Wear derby, is praised for offering 'a truly bucolic dining experience.' The awards experts note that Pine is a restaurant you’ll need to visit at least twice to fully appreciate its essence.

Co-owners Cal Byerley and Sian Byerley expressed their delight: “Being included in the National Restaurant Awards is a huge pat on the back for the whole team, and we’re so proud of their commitment and sheer hard work. The team has to pull together and work hard for everything to gel, and when that happens, it’s pretty special.”

Solstice: Cementing a reputation

Solstice, located on the Quayside, finished just behind Pine at 42nd place. The acclaimed venue was opened by Kenny Atkinson after his success with nearby House of Tides. The National Restaurant Awards experts declare that Solstice, famed for its 15 to 18-course tasting menus, has 'cemented Atkinson's reputation as one of the north’s most proficient and exciting chefs.'

The awards use an 'elite and authoritative judging academy' comprising over 200 experts from the industry, including food writers, chefs, and restaurateurs. Each judge selects their top seven restaurants visited in the last 12 months, from which the top 100 list is compiled.

While many local contenders could have made the list, Pine and Solstice are worthy representatives of the region's vibrant culinary scene.
