New York-based fashion brand Everlane has caused a frenzy with the release of its new Work Pants, priced at $50 (£37). The trousers sold out within hours of launching on January 25, after amassing a waiting list of 12,000 people.
The pants come in five colours—navy, ochre, black, grey, and green—and in two lengths: ankle and regular. Designed with a high-waisted silhouette and made from stretchy cotton, they aim to flatter all body shapes. A discreet side zipper replaces the traditional front fly.
Everlane, a favourite of celebrities including Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, and Meghan Markle, prides itself on 'Radical Transparency'. The company reveals that the pants cost $21 to make, with a $29 mark-up to $50, compared to a typical retail price of $105.
For those who missed out, the pants will not be restocked until June 10, 2018. This is not the first time Everlane has seen high demand; in 2013, 7,500 people waited for the Petra bag, and recently over 15,000 signed up for the $150 Day Heel.
