Following the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, demand for affordable versions of her Givenchy gown has surged. The original dress, designed by Clare Waight Keller, carries a price tag estimated between £200,000 and £400,000. Several high street retailers have released budget alternatives, and the Evening Standard tested four of the most popular replicas.
Missguided's 'Bridal White Long Sleeve Open Back Fishtail Dress' was a frontrunner, priced at £35. Testers praised its simplicity and silhouette, which closely resembled Meghan's gown. However, the dress failed the VPL test, with one tester noting, “You’d have to go commando on your wedding day.” Despite this, it was deemed 'princess-perfect' for its elegance and affordability.
Chi Chi Clothing's 'Meghan dress' was also well received. Sharing the tight fit and featuring a flattering waistband, testers felt it was the most authentic replica. One remarked, “It feels the most Meghan one,” while another said, “I think if my mum saw me in this she’d cry.” The dress was praised as a great budget alternative.
Next's ivory wedding dress, at £190, was the most luxe option tested. While it held a modest aesthetic, testers felt it was more suited to a beach wedding than a royal ceremony. Sizing was an issue, with one tester describing it as “wearing a massive nightie.” Another concluded, “This is no Givenchy.”
A fourth dress from an unnamed retailer was universally panned, with testers likening it to a “frumpy mermaid” and a “sparkly toilet brush.” Only one tester felt like a princess, albeit “a Disney, jazz hands kind.” The accompanying Jon Richard tiara and Grace Loves Lace veil were cited as saving graces.
