Vogue staffer Chloe Malle has been appointed as head of editorial content at American Vogue, succeeding Anna Wintour. The 39-year-old journalist takes on the role immediately, as Wintour steps back from day-to-day editing but remains as chief content officer for Condé Nast and global editorial director.
Malle, who joined Vogue in 2011, was most recently editor of Vogue.com and co-host of the podcast The Run-Through with Vogue. She is known for spearheading editor-led newsletters and annual events such as Dogue, a dog fashion magazine. Wintour praised Malle's ability to balance the magazine's history with its future, calling her 'the standard-bearer and the boundary-pushing leader'.
Malle's appointment follows a period of speculation, with bookies naming unlikely candidates such as the Duchess of Sussex. However, insiders noted that Wintour sought a journalist capable of overseeing live content and mentoring regional editors. Malle's coverage of the Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez wedding earlier this year was seen as a proof of her mettle with high-profile celebrities.
Malle is the daughter of actor Candice Bergen and the late film director Louis Malle. She began her career at the New York Observer and has written for The New York Times, Marie Claire, and the Wall Street Journal. While fashion is not her primary interest, she told Into the Gloss in 2014 that she was 'seduced by the Vogue machine'.
