Now, a stylist who worked in the fashion industry during that era has shared the secrets behind her iconic wardrobe – and how to achieve it without breaking the bank or harming the planet.
Liz Teich, a sustainable fashion advocate, recommends building a wardrobe that is 80% staples and 20% trend pieces. 'I think Bessette's closet was nearly 100% staples and that's why you always saw it work,' Teich says. Key investment pieces include a classic white button-up shirt, black cigarette trousers, loafers, square-toe heels and boots, and cashmere sweaters – all timeless items that can be mixed and matched for a fresh look.
Bessette was known for mixing high and low price points, pairing designer items like Prada with vintage finds and even drugstore accessories. 'Designer doesn't always mean quality,' Teich advises. 'I recommend covering up the logo or brand, and asking yourself: “Is this something I’d like if I didn’t know who made it?”' For those seeking affordable alternatives, Teich suggests skipping obvious designer labels when buying secondhand and opting for smaller brands from the era.

Teich, who started her career at Chaiken in Manhattan, emphasises that a 90s-inspired wardrobe is inherently sustainable because of its timelessness. 'The great thing about a 90s-inspired wardrobe is that it can be quite timeless,' she says. By focusing on quality staples and curating outfits carefully, anyone can channel Bessette's effortless style without contributing to landfill.
