Alex Jones' Easy, Flattering Jacket and Jeans Are Made for September
Alex Jones' Easy, Flattering Jacket and Jeans for September

The One Show presenter Alex Jones has teamed up with Cotton Traders for an autumn-ready edit of jackets, denim, dresses and more. Among the standout pieces is a cropped trench jacket priced at £65, which she says is perfect to 'throw over anything'.

Classic Outfit Formula

Appearing on Instagram last week, the presenter stepped out in a classic outfit formula that anyone can replicate. She paired a classic white t-shirt with some lightwash jeans, and finished the look with the Cropped Trench Jacket.

Speaking on the outfit, Alex said: "I just love a cropped trench, it's so handy. I think this would be perfect for those months that are still quite warm, September, October. It's easy to throw over anything really. Easy, simple, sophisticated."

Design and Details

The trench is made from 65% cotton and comes in a short, double breasted silhouette for a modern take on a classic. It is fully lined for warmth, and features adjustable cuffs and notched lapels for a smart, polished look.

This style of jacket is often a popular choice for autumn. The shorter hemline is transeasonal-friendly, working best for milder days, while the compact size makes them easy to carry if the weather warms up during the day. Plus, the cropped length often means they pair better with high-waisted trousers, wide-leg denim, and longline skirts in comparison to bulkier, long-line jackets.

Wide-Leg Jeans and Customer Reviews

Alex Jones teamed her Cotton Traders jacket with a pair of the brand's Wide Leg Jeans, £40. Available in sizes 8-22 and three different leg lengths, the jeans come in four colours: stonewash, lightwash, ecru and dark chocolate. The latter is already almost sold out, but the 49-year-old's lightwash option is still available in all sizes.

They are made from cotton-rich denim with 2% elastane, giving them a little stretch while still promising to hold their shape. The new and improved fit is designed to sit comfortably around the hips before falling into a wider leg, while traditional five-pocket styling, belt loops and a zip fly keep the design classic.

The style has earned a 4.4 star rating based on over 160 reviews, with mature women being particularly impressed. One said: "Heavier material than expected but, with season changing, perfect for casual use. Legs not too wide for the older woman and size and length were true." Another added: "I bought 2 pairs of these jeans in different colours. So many wide leg jeans are just too wide (made for teenagers, not the older lady) but these are a snug fit around the hips and a flattering widening of the legs. The fabric is soft with some stretch and good quality. Excellent value for money."

However, as is often the case with jeans, they may not be for everyone. One customer commented: "These wide leg jeans are smart and comfortable. The material is a little crisp but will soften I'm sure over time. Probably because I'm between sizes, while the hip width is fine, the waist is too large and it gaps at the back. Had to sew darts in them." Though another five star review said they 'fit like a glove', adding: "The denim is proper quality, as are all the items I've purchased over the years. I'm very pleased with my choice."

More Pieces from the Edit

Elsewhere on the high street, River Island's Beige Waisted Cropped Trench Coat comes in at £59. As well as being made from 66% cotton, it also has a drawstring channel to further cinch in the waist.

Another top pick from the edit is this Cotton Traders Printed Twill Oversized Jacket. Priced at £59, the 100% cotton jacket has an oversized fit, button fastening and two deep front pockets, with an all-over floral print that sets it apart from traditional overshirts.

For those who would prefer a frock, the Cotton Traders Stripe Maxi Shirt Dress, £55, is a really smart, tailored piece. The striped maxi dress boasts a classic navy-and-white stripe with a relaxed cotton construction and flattering tie-waist detail, while the pockets are a practical bonus.

One reviewer called it 'really comfortable and wearable', adding 'You could wear it anywhere.' Though one said: "Very smart dress a little bit too long for me, otherwise it fitted very well." Another wrote: "Delighted with this very comfy dress. I especially like its deep pockets- takes a purse so no need for a bag."
