80% of women wearing bras wrong, stylist reveals

Stylist Kenzie, who runs the account @stylingwithkenzie, claims that "80% of women" are wearing bras wrong. In a series of TikTok videos, she shared fitting tips learned from her first job at a luxury lingerie company, where staff were trained on how to fit women properly.

Check the bra band first

Kenzie said the fit of the bra band is the most important factor. The band should sit parallel around the small of the back and should not be pullable out more than two inches.

She noted that many women get band sizing wrong because they worry about a snug fit. Since bras stretch over time, she advised attaching a new bra to the loosest hook, not the tightest, when trying it on.

Measure cup size alongside the band

According to Kenzie, cup size is influenced by band size. As band size changes, cup size changes too, so for every band size you go down, you should go up in cup size.

The cup is meant to contain and support breast tissue while the band does most of the lifting. When the cup does not match breast volume or shape, pressure shifts to straps or underwires. Overflow from the top or sides of the cup indicates a size that is too small, while sagging, puckering, or gaps suggest the cup is too big. Kenzie emphasised that straps are not for support; the cups and band provide it.

Consider cup shape

Cup shape matters because it determines how volume is distributed and supported. Even with the right size label, a mismatched shape can cause gaping, spilling, digging in, or shifting.

Kenzie explained that there are over 25 different bra styles, but most popular stores only carry five, meaning many women may be wearing a T-shirt bra without realising other options exist. Wearing the proper shape, she said, makes you look more lifted and smooth, and feel more comfortable and supported.
