Former Love Island star Zara McDermott is set to front a new one-off BBC Three documentary exploring the motivations and repercussions of revenge porn. McDermott, who was herself a victim after nude photos of her were shared online and went viral following her appearance on the show in 2018, said the incident left her 'devastated and looking for answers'.
In the hour-long programme, McDermott will share her personal story in detail for the first time. 'I feel passionate about helping other people in the situation I was in,' she said. 'Confronting issues head-on is the only way we can make change and I am putting my heart into this documentary in the hope that it will make people think twice about revenge porn.'
On Instagram, McDermott expressed feeling 'humbled and honoured' to work with the BBC, adding that her 'main aim is to bring awareness to this issue, and be a voice for those who have suffered in silence and to help make a change.' She acknowledged being nervous about sharing intimate details but hoped it would 'lessen the blame on us victims.'
Last year, experts highlighted inadequacies in revenge porn laws, with cases doubling in four years but charges dropping. The Times reported that one in ten Britons had been victims, with women predominantly targeted. BBC Three controller Fiona Campbell said: 'With thousands of women across the country having faced injustices as a result of revenge porn, it’s more important than ever for BBC Three to be exploring this issue.'
