The series, which aired from 2004 to 2018, launched global stars like One Direction, Leona Lewis, and Little Mix, but has faced growing scrutiny over its treatment of contestants.
Insiders say the documentary will not shy away from asking 'difficult questions' regarding allegations of bullying, manipulation, and questionable practices during filming. It will speak to those 'closest' to the production, both in front of and behind the camera, and producers are hoping to secure the involvement of show creator Simon Cowell.
The programme, which has yet to be 'fully greenlit', comes amid increased attention on the mental health impact of reality TV. Former contestants such as Janet Devlin and Katie Waissel have spoken out about negative experiences, and the death of One Direction star Liam Payne last October has renewed focus on the pressures faced by participants.
A source told The Sun: 'This will be a definitive, premium series about a true entertainment TV juggernaut.' The documentary is said to follow the style of Sky Docs' recent unfiltered biopic on Boyzone, and will 'lift the lid on both the highs and lows of the show'.
