Tonight's television highlights include a fascinating documentary about the rise and fall of a Russian spy, a new series of a renovation show, and a film choice featuring Paul Mescal.
Spy Next Door: The Anna Chapman Story
Channel 4 at 9pm presents a two-part documentary exploring the tale of Anna Chapman, also known as Anya Kushchenko. Chapman was a shrewd spy who charmed her way into the higher echelons of society in London and New York. The documentary hears from some of her entirely unwitting companions, who ranged from a Brighton techno DJ to a Mayfair financier, and agents involved in surveilling her.
As Vladimir Putin briefly played at diplomacy with prime ministers and presidents, Chapman was among his foot soldiers. But, inevitably, in her case and that of Putin, nothing was ever quite as it seemed.
Athens: Birth of Democracy and Extraordinary Extensions
PBS America at 9.35am visits Athens to investigate the origin story of democracy, focusing on an archaeological quest to unearth everything from the bodies of dissidents to ancient voting machines.
Channel 4 at 8pm airs the third series of Extraordinary Extensions, where musician Tinie Tempah continues to channel his inner Kevin McCloud. This week, he meets a couple planning a 'Korwegian' conversion, that is Korean and Norwegian, and a solo renovator who is starting to feel as though her project is cursed.

BBC Two at 9pm presents Murder Trial: Death of a Dog Walker, featuring footage from the trial, doorbell camera film and face-to-face interviews. It looks at the murder of Brian Low, a groundsman shot while walking his dog in rural Scotland. The accused is David Campbell, a gamekeeper who was, according to the prosecuting lawyer, good at concealing the evidence.
Channel 5 at 9pm airs 999: Critical Condition, where an unconscious young mother is rushed into the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham after banging her head. Elsewhere, octogenarian Clive has fallen off his ladder and is at risk of pneumonia.
BBC Three at 10pm has a double helping of Guy Montgomery's Guy Mont-Spelling Bee from Australia, featuring retro production design and comedic contestants including standup Rose Matafeo.
Film choice and live sport
Netflix offers Gladiator II, Ridley Scott's sequel set in ancient Rome. Paul Mescal stars as Lucius, the son of Russell Crowe's Maximus, who is living a quiet life in north Africa until an invading Roman army take him into slavery. From there, he becomes a rebellious gladiator under the gaze of his owner Macrinus, played by Denzel Washington.
Live sport includes a pre-season football friendly between Man United and Leeds at Croke Park in Dublin on ITV1 at 7pm, and the Uefa Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa at Red Bull Arena in Salzburg on TNT Sports 1 at 7pm.
