Sebb's, a basement restaurant on Miller Street in Glasgow, has earned a Michelin bib gourmand just over a year after opening in late 2024. Head chef Danny Carruthers' menu offers a globally inspired selection, from sobrassada and ancho honey pitta to tandoori pork belly with tamarind chutney.
A Hidden Gem with a Distinct Vibe
The restaurant's bright red door is easy to miss, but inside, diners find a room with the vibe of a beatnik diner inside a bowling alley. There is no natural light, booths for conspiring, a DJ playing psychedelic rock, and food served in brown paper bags. The atmosphere is informal and intriguing, fitting the bib gourmand's purpose of rewarding places that are odd and accessible.
On a solo lunchtime visit, the reviewer was treated to an alcohol-free Crossip cooler cocktail with an olive, and a round of pakoras with cheese and piccalilli. The coronation cauliflower, described as an "absolute stonking triumph," features tiny, nutty florets in a cashew-based sauce with coconut and sultanas.
Global Flavours and Technique
The menu is a "delicious bombardment of continents, cuisines and cultural trickledowns," showcasing the chef's diverse influences. Dishes include atom dip with sweet, smoky mashed aubergine and hazelnut dukkah, and rump fillet served with cowboy butter, a Glasgow take on beurre maître d'hôtel with garlic, herbs, mustard, and chilli.
Though the soft-serve machine was broken, the chocolate sorbet offered instead was "one of the best things I've eaten all year." The reviewer enjoyed the meal so much that they recommended Sebb's to strangers at Glasgow Central Station and later in Leeds, Birmingham, and London.
Sebb's is located at 68 Miller Street, Glasgow G1, open all week from noon to 9.45pm, with à la carte from about £30 a head plus drinks and service.
