Patrick Grant cuts alcohol and uses 5:2 fasting for weight loss

The Great British Sewing Bee judge Patrick Grant has spoken about his weight loss journey and how he manages to stay slim and fit into mid-life. The 54-year-old presenter appeared on the 20 Questions With podcast in March, where he answered questions about mortality, television, and his weight loss.

When asked how he stays slim, Grant replied: “Several things. Firstly I don’t really drink very much. I drink a very very modest amount. Like I probably only drink less than 10 units of alcohol a year I would think. I just keep it for really special occasions.” He noted that when he first stopped regular drinking, he lost about three or four kilos.

Sweet tooth and 5:2 fasting

After losing that weight, Grant said he developed a sweet tooth, which offset the benefits. He then turned to the Michael Mosley 5:2 fasting method. He explained: “I do the Michael Mosley 5:2 fasting thing which I find not only regulates my weight, it regulates my sleep; it just feels really good.” According to the British Heart Foundation, the 5:2 diet involves eating normally for five days and fasting on two days, consuming only 25% of normal calorie intake.

Cycling and mental health

Grant has also spoken about cycling as part of his fitness regime. He told Cycle Speak that cycling helps clear his head mentally. He said: “There's definitely the mental aspect. The clearing of the head and having time to reconnect. I really enjoy just being in those places and the speed that you pass through the scenery on a bicycle seems to be optimal.” He added that he does not use the Strava app, preferring to disconnect.

Grant returns to The Great British Sewing Bee tonight (Tuesday, July 21) at 8pm on BBC One.
