Macaulay Culkin has shared touching memories of John Candy in the new documentary John Candy: I Like Me, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Home Alone star recalled how Candy watched out for him on the set of the 1989 film Uncle Buck, noticing the difficult behaviour of Culkin's father.
Culkin said Candy was among the first to see that his father was 'a monster' even before the fame and money from Home Alone escalated the situation. 'I think John was looking a little side-eyed, like, “Is everything all right over there?”' Culkin remembered, adding that he felt a 'paternal' energy from Candy.
The documentary, directed by Colin Hanks and executive produced by Ryan Reynolds, features interviews with Candy's co-stars including Steve Martin. Candy's daughter, Jennifer Candy-Sullivan, said her father's concern for Culkin was typical of his genuine nature. Hanks noted that Candy made everyone feel important and heard.
Culkin and his brother Kieran have previously spoken about their strained relationship with their father, who they say was physically and mentally abusive. John Candy: I Like Me will be available worldwide on Prime Video from October 10.
