Theroux's interview with musician Bobby Vylan in October sparked controversy. Vylan had chanted 'Death to the IDF' at Glastonbury. Theroux questioned the chant, stating he does not agree with 'death to' chants. Critics, including author Dave Rich, accused Theroux of 'soft-soaping' Vylan by not pressing him on earlier calls for 'death to every single IDF soldier'. Theroux also used the phrase 'post Holocaust Jewish exceptionalism' when discussing Israel and Gaza, which drew backlash. British Airways paused sponsorship of his podcast following the interview.
