A Friendship Tested
Valentino and Cinthya had been friends since sixth-grade science class, when they were 13. When Cinthya got engaged in February 2023, Valentino flew from Minneapolis to Miami for her engagement party, despite personal struggles. However, by the time of the bachelorette trip in Puerto Rico, Valentino's life had become overwhelming: his grandmother had stage four cancer, he had left a four-year relationship, and he was adjusting to a new city and a stressful job. He also wanted to get sober but didn't share these struggles with Cinthya.
During the bachelorette trip, Valentino felt irked by small requests, like fetching coffee for the group. At the bridal shower, he was hurt to find no seat for him at Cinthya's table and was asked to stand with the groomsmen instead of the bridesmaids. He also discovered he was the only bridal party member without a plus one, which he took as a sign of their diminishing bond.
The Breaking Point
Feeling emotionally drained, Valentino texted Cinthya the night before the wedding, saying he wouldn't attend. He visited his grandmother instead, which was special. After a period of silence, Valentino reached out to say he no longer wanted to be best friends. Cinthya didn't fight it, and they went months without speaking.
Eventually, Valentino saw on Instagram that Cinthya had become a mother, a role she had always wanted. He reached out with a long message, and she accepted his apology. They resumed their friendship without awkwardness, and Valentino realized that Cinthya's grace in moving on showed how much she valued him.
Cinthya's Perspective
Cinthya acknowledged that she wasn't as attentive as Jamie expected, but she felt he didn't consider her own stresses. She admitted she didn't know the full extent of his struggles and that she now understands her actions were hurtful. She said, "I do feel like there were times Jamie judged me unfairly and chose not to see the things I was doing for him, or the effort I was making. But he means a lot to me, and I think we’ve always had different ways of showing love and support."
