Royal Shakespeare Company Announces Stage Adaptation of Game of Thrones Prequel

The expansive universe of Game of Thrones is set to conquer a new frontier as the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) reveals plans to bring Westeros to the stage. Following the success of television prequels like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the RSC will produce Game of Thrones: The Mad King, a theatrical prequel based on George RR Martin's novels, premiering at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon this summer.

Author's Enthusiasm for Stage Adaptation

George RR Martin expressed unexpected delight at this new venture, stating in a release: "For my work to now be adapted for the stage is something I did not expect but welcome with great enthusiasm and excitement." He elaborated that the RSC was the obvious choice, citing Shakespeare's influence on his writing and shared challenges in depicting battles live. "Shakespeare is the greatest name in English literature, and his plays have been a constant source of inspiration to me and my writing," Martin added, highlighting the thrill of seeing his story unfold in a live environment.

Plot and Creative Team Details

The RSC has released a synopsis for The Mad King, promising a tale set before the main books. It describes a world where a long winter thaws in Harrenhal, with spring on the horizon. At a lavish banquet before a jousting tournament, lovers meet and revellers speculate, while dissenters plot against the bloodthirsty Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen. The story will test family bonds, ancient prophecies, and succession lines, featuring characters from houses like Targaryen, Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, and Martell.

Adapted by Duncan Macmillan, known for the Barbican's 2025 production of The Seagull starring Cate Blanchett, and directed by Dominic Cooke, the newly appointed artistic director of London's Almeida Theatre, the play aims to capture Shakespearean scale. Macmillan and Cooke noted: "George's storytelling is Shakespearean in its scale and its themes - dynastic struggle, ambition, rebellion, madness, prophecy, ill-fated love." They emphasized that Shakespeare's works served as a primary reference, making the RSC a natural home for this ambitious production.
