Philippe Gaulier, Legendary Clown Guru and Mentor to Stars, Dies at 82

Master clown and revered theatre teacher Philippe Gaulier, whose formative influence shaped generations of celebrated comedians and actors, has died at the age of 82. The founder of France's renowned École Philippe Gaulier passed away on Monday due to complications from a lung infection, according to a statement from his family.

A Formative Influence on Comedy Greats

Gaulier's extraordinary teaching career spanned decades, during which he mentored an impressive roster of performing arts luminaries. His students included Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Thompson, Rachel Weisz, and Geoffrey Rush, among many others who achieved international acclaim. The teacher had suffered a stroke in 2023 and, since that time, had "received warm words of encouragement from all over the world," his family noted. "He seemed especially happy to receive letters and messages from his former students. Teaching was his passion and purpose in life."

The Brutally Honest Teaching Philosophy

Famous for his mercilessly honest approach to instruction, Gaulier founded his school in 1980 after studying under master mime artist Jacques Lecoq. The institution, now based in Étampes outside Paris, operated on a first-come, first-served basis without auditions. Gaulier encouraged each student to "find your idiot" and would make new pupils wear red clown noses, explaining: "When a student puts one on, I see better how he was when he was a child."

His classes were known for delivering harsh tongue-lashings that pushed students to their limits. Comedian Phil Burgers, better known for his silent clown persona Doctor Brown, once told the Guardian: "I had moments of extreme suffering there. It's really, really hard. But once you can handle the insults, something inside you cracks and you can begin." Many who endured this rigorous training went on to achieve significant success at the Edinburgh Fringe and other major comedy festivals.

From Tragic Actor to Comic Master

Born in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1943, Gaulier initially trained as a dramatic actor but discovered that audiences laughed even when he performed tragic roles. This revelation led him to study with Jacques Lecoq, whose training emphasized mask work, improvisation, and clowning techniques. As a performer himself, Gaulier specialized in bouffon – a satirical, grotesque style of clowning – but at his school, he taught clowning more broadly to comic actors including Roberto Benigni.

Enduring Legacy and Tributes

Sacha Baron Cohen described Gaulier as "the funniest man I've ever met," while Helena Bonham Carter remembered him as "a hilarious man with a real sense of pathos." Rachel Weisz credited her work with Gaulier for influencing her performance in the film The Lobster. Visiting the school in 2016, the Guardian's comedy critic Brian Logan observed a "grizzled, straggle-haired man who couldn't look or sound more like a 'clown guru' if he tried," yet noted "humour and warmth behind every blunt statement and volley of abuse."

Gaulier's teaching extended beyond comedy to performance more broadly, with his school offering courses in Greek tragedy, Shakespeare, Chekhov, melodrama, and "masked play." "I teach theatre," he told the Guardian. "You take it and, after, you do whatever you want with it." His training profoundly influenced generations, including Simon McBurney, whose theatre company Complicité drew inspiration from Gaulier's methods. Other notable students included US actor Julia Garner, Australian actor Eryn Jean Norvill, and Australian comedian Tom Walker.

Although Gaulier retired from full-time teaching after his 2023 stroke, his graduates have continued to conduct classes adhering to his distinctive philosophy. He is survived by his wife and former student, Michiko Miyazaki Gaulier, who manages the day-to-day operations of École Philippe Gaulier, ensuring his revolutionary approach to performance education endures.
