Strictly Come Dancing star Amber Davies has spoken out about the online criticism she has faced during her time on the BBC show, insisting that the overwhelming 'love' from supporters far outweighs any negativity.
Addressing the 'Familiar' Criticism
The musical theatre performer, who rose to fame after winning Love Island in 2017, has been partnered with professional dancer Nikita Kuzmin. Despite finishing second on the judges' leaderboard last weekend, she landed in the bottom two after the public vote. Critics online have focused on her previous performance experience.
Speaking ahead of the grand final, the 29-year-old acknowledged this was a recurring theme on the show. "I feel like this isn’t a new story. We’ve seen it every single season," Davies remarked. "Layton (Williams) had it, Ashley (Roberts) had it, Danny Mac had it. So it didn’t come as a surprise."
Focus on Support and Hard Work
Davies explained that the heightened scrutiny has only intensified in recent weeks but emphasised her gratitude for the backing she has received from the start. "From day one, all I’ve ever felt is support and love, because at the end of the day, it’s just an entertainment show," she said.
She did not shy away from the debate about her background, stating: "Yes, there’s opinions online … I can appreciate where they come from. I have experience compared to these two and I’m not shying away from that." However, she argued that musical theatre is vastly different from the ballroom and Latin disciplines required on Strictly Come Dancing.
Looking Ahead to the Grand Final
Davies will compete against internet personality George Clarke and former England footballer Karen Carney in the 2025 Strictly final this Saturday. Reflecting on her journey, she concluded that the online discourse has not derailed her experience.
"However, I would say that the love actually does overshine the hate," Davies affirmed. "It’s not life or death... It hasn’t affected my journey in any way. I’ve felt so supported within the Strictly building." She added that while social media opinions are pervasive in 2025, she has remained true to herself and worked hard throughout the competition.
The Strictly Come Dancing 2025 final will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 7pm on Saturday.
