Yorkshire Vet star in tears after heartbreaking farewell

The latest episode of The Yorkshire Vet on Channel 5 took an emotional turn as vet Matt Jackson-Smith and rescue farm owner Jake faced the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to Truffles, a seven-year-old pig.

Jake, from Millington's rescue farm near Huddersfield, had called Matt to help with Truffles, who he had rescued as a piglet after the young animal caught his hoof in a grate. Truffles had been struggling to walk on his back hoof, and after taking X-rays, Matt revealed the pig was suffering from a serious spinal condition.

Palliative care and a difficult decision

The diagnosis meant the next step for Truffles would be palliative care before he would eventually be put to sleep. Jake, visibly upset, walked off and asked himself: “Why did I have to like animals?”

He told the Yorkshire Vet team: “It’s made me emotional because he was the first animal we rescued so he’s like family to me so today was always going to be difficult. I did my best to hold the tears back but I didn’t do very well.”

A month later: cellulitis and a final goodbye

A month later, Jake shared that despite some progress, Truffles had developed an aggressive form of cellulitis, meaning he could no longer comfortably put weight on his back leg. Speaking to Truffles, Jake said: “You’re a very loved boy, aren’t ya?” before adding: “He’s going to break my heart into a thousand little pieces when he goes but he’ll never be forgotten, that’s for sure.”

Matt explained that euthanasia wasn’t the hardest part of the job, describing it as “bittersweet”. He said: “You’re doing the animal a kindness. There’s no quality of life there and you’re relieving its suffering in the kindest, most peaceful way possible.”

‘He’ll go knowing he was completely loved’

After saying his goodbyes, Jake reflected on what Truffles meant to him: “He’s been a little piglet that’s lived in my house, to the one I tucked in to sleep when he was too small and didn’t have any friends so couldn't stay warm. It’s truly been a blessing to watch him live his life here. I said I wasn’t going to cry. I think he’ll go knowing he was completely loved and adored and that’s the main thing, isn’t it?”

The Yorkshire Vet continues every Thursday at 8pm on Channel 5.
