Fans at Ministry of Sound were showered in giant Jaffa Cakes as EDM pioneer and globally renowned DJ Steve Aoki revived his legendary cake-throwing tradition during his headline show in London, reigniting the nation’s long-running cake versus biscuit debate.
The question of whether a Jaffa Cake is a cake or a biscuit has long been one of the UK’s most hotly contested debates, and now it has found its way onto the dance floor at Ministry of Sound. Fans attending Steve Aoki’s headline set at one of London’s most iconic music venues braced themselves for a classic Aoki moment: the legendary cake throw.
Instead of his usual sheet cakes, Aoki appeared to swap them out for giant McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes instead. Supersized Jaffa Cakes from the DJ booth showered the audience with light sponge, dark chocolate, and orange jelly.
Some insisted the DJ had outed himself as a true cake believer, reinforcing the hotly debated argument that a Jaffa Cake is, as the name suggests, a cake. Others argued that despite the sponge base, no product found in the biscuit aisle could ever truly be considered a cake.
Steve Aoki said: “I’m a big fan of Jaffa Cakes, and since they’re so uniquely British, I wanted to switch things up for my Ministry of Sound gig. Having thrown over 30,000 cakes around the world since 2011, I’m fairly sure only in the UK could a cake throw spark a national debate. Cake or biscuit? I’ll leave that for the Brits to decide.”
He added: “I’ve played a lot of shows in London over the years, and UK crowds always bring a different kind of energy. When I decided I was going to throw giant Jaffa Cakes and looked into it, I was amazed by just how passionate people are about whether they’re a cake or a biscuit. The second they started flying into the crowd, everyone instantly understood the reference. That’s when I knew it would be one of those unexpected moments that people would remember.”
A McVitie’s spokesperson said: “We can’t say watching Jaffa Cakes fly across one of London’s most renowned dance floors, courtesy of legendary DJ Steve Aoki, was on our bucket list for 2026 - but we love it. We’re thrilled to see he’s on the right side of history too. Steve is right. Jaffa Cakes are, and always have been, cakes.”
In a bid to settle the decades-long debate once and for all, the brand recently launched an actual biscuit in the form of new Jaffa Cakes Flavour Digestives.
