Roy 'Chubby' Brown claims Port Talbot venue refused 2027 show

Roy 'Chubby' Brown, the 81-year-old stand-up comedian whose real name is Royston Vasey, has been told he cannot perform at a theatre in Port Talbot next year, according to his management team. The team said they attempted to book a 2027 date at Yr Aelwyd Arts Centre, formerly the Princess Royal Theatre, but were told the venue was 'unable to accommodate' him.

Venue Refusal After Refurbishment

Brown has performed at the venue many times before, his team said, but this time the arts centre declined the booking. The theatre is currently undergoing a major transformation, with Neath Port Talbot Council stating it is set to reopen in 2027 with enhanced facilities and a programme of live performance, comedy, music, family shows and community events.

A statement posted on the comedian's social media page by a member of his team read: "After its major refurbishment, I approached the Yr Aelwyd Arts Centre in Port Talbot, formerly the Princess Royal Theatre, which Roy has performed at many, many times over the years, asking if we could program a show with them in 2027, when the venue is about to re-open."

Team Response and Upcoming Gigs

The statement continued: "Sadly this is the reply I received back, and I quote, 'Following consideration, we are unable to accommodate the show within our current program'."

"Obviously, a very confusing reply for me, as would've thought a newly refurbished venue would welcome Roy back with open arms as (he) has always had very healthy crowds and is obviously very popular with his fans in the Port Talbot and surrounding area."

The statement said the comedian was in demand, with gigs lined up at other venues between November and January, including at Congress Theatre in Cwmbran on January 8 and 9. It added: "Roy will keep performing where allowed, it's simply comedy."

Council Response

A Neath Port Talbot Council spokeswoman said: "Early next year the former Princess Royal Theatre will re-open as Yr Aelwyd, following significant investment."

"This investment has been made to provide Neath Port Talbot with a venue fit for the future and one that will ensure the area's rich tradition for performing arts is handed down to future generations. Alongside developing our bid for Port Talbot to be recognised as the UK Town of Culture, we are developing a new programme for the theatre."

"This programme will include a range of activities, shine a light on local talent and celebrate everything that makes Port Talbot special. All booking requests are now being considered in the context of this programme and the future direction of the venue."
