The BBC has announced a slate of six new programmes, revealed during its spotlight session at the Edinburgh TV Festival. The lineup includes a drama about menopause from Happy Valley writer Sally Wainwright, a second season of comedy thriller Black Ops, and a new detective series starring Sacha Dhawan.
Wainwright's six-episode series Hot Flush is set in Hebden Bridge and follows five women around menopause age who form a punk-rock band. The writer said: 'I've been wanting to write a series like this for a long time. It's a celebration of women of a certain age.' The show is inspired by the 1977 series Rock Follies.
Black Ops returns for a second season, with Gbemisola Ikumelo and Hammed Animashaun reprising their roles as community support officers Dom and Kay. Ikumelo said: 'It's been such a joy to see how audiences have got behind this show. This next season promises to have Dom and Kay really surprising us.'
Other new shows include The Jetty, a four-part drama starring Jenna Coleman as a rookie detective in Lancashire; an untitled six-part mystery drama from BAFTA winner Nicôle Lecky about two women in a gated community; a documentary on assisted suicide presented by actor and disability campaigner Liz Carr; and Virdee, a six-part detective series based on AA Dhand's novels, starring Sacha Dhawan as Sikh policeman Harry Virdee.
