Alan Carr has opened up about the emotional challenges of Christmas, admitting that the festive season can be “very emotional” despite the tinsel, presents, and cheer. The comedian and presenter shared his thoughts during a break from filming the Christmas special of Amanda & Alan’s Spanish Job on BBC.
Speaking with co-host Amanda Holden on a beach in Moclín, Spain, Carr reflected on the undercurrent of sadness that can accompany Christmas. “Beneath all the tinsel and all the presents and the cheers, it can be quite tender if you’ve struggled or lost someone,” he said. “Because nothing hurts like seeing that empty seat at Christmas.”
The Christmas special saw Amanda and Alan return to the historic Spanish village after transforming a derelict property earlier this year. They hosted a festive party to thank the locals who had helped bring the renovation to life.
Amanda remarked on the joy of being together with loved ones, saying, “You do think ‘god isn’t it amazing that we’re all around this table and we’re all healthy with the people you love’.”
Looking ahead, the duo will star in Amanda & Alan’s Greek Job, set to air on Friday, January 2. They will travel to the island of Corfu for a new renovation project. Amanda teased, “We were fantasizing, saying oh, wouldn't it be amazing if we could do a show in Greece… we never actually thought it would be a reality!”
