Director Zach Cregger has confirmed that the upcoming prequel to his horror film Weapons, focusing on the mysterious Aunt Gladys, will be designed to stand on its own. Speaking to TheWrap, Cregger acknowledged concerns that exploring the villain's origin might diminish the original film's mystique.
“It’s crossed my mind,” Cregger said. “But I think that the Gladys story is such an interesting story that I think it’s going to feel very separate and stand on its own two feet, and I don’t think it’s going to diminish Weapons.”
In Weapons, all but one child in Justine Gandy’s (Julia Garner) third-grade class goes missing after waking up and running off at exactly 2:17am. The truth unfolds through multiple perspectives, featuring Amy Madigan as Aunt Gladys, alongside Josh Brolin, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher and Benedict Wong.
Cregger revealed he had the prequel idea ready before the film’s release. “I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out,” he said. He also expressed delight at fan response to Madigan’s character, hoping for many Halloween Gladyses.
New Line is in early talks for the prequel, which was confirmed in August.
