The Met Office has weighed in on speculation of a snow bomb hitting the UK, as weather maps indicate possible snowfall on Monday, February 5. According to WXCharts, flurries could fall as far south as London, with Manchester and Birmingham also at risk, while Scotland remains dry and the southwest faces torrential rain.
However, the Met Office has dismissed rumours of a snow deluge at the start of February, instead warning that colder conditions and snow are more likely between February 9 and 23. New maps show February 10 could see much of the UK experiencing snowfall.
A Met Office spokesperson said: 'Later in the month there is an increasing likelihood of winds from the north or east, which will increase the chance of some colder spells and perhaps snow.' The forecaster added that through mid-February, changeable conditions are expected, with the wettest and windiest weather in the north and northwest, while the southeast may see drier periods.
Ian Simpson, a meteorologist at NetWeather, noted: 'The weather will start off fairly mild... but will increasingly turn cold and sunny with northerly winds and potential for some snow, particularly in northern Scotland, and widespread overnight frosts.' He added that cold air masses are expected between February 5 and February 11.
