The Sky Atlantic crime thriller Under Salt Marsh, starring Kelly Reilly and Rafe Spall, was largely filmed in Barmouth and Fairbourne in north-west Wales, with the Mawddach Estuary standing in for the fictional town of Morfa Halen.
Creator Claire Oakley told RadioTimes.com that the cast and crew also spent time in Anglesey, filming at Newborough Forest, Niwbwrch and the Menai Bridge. Interior and studio work took place in Cardiff, where the team built a marsh set for the finale.
Other real locations include the coastal village of Fairbourne in Gwynedd, Rhigos Primary School in Rhondda Cynon Taf, the village of Llanbedr and Shell Island. The fictional Spider Island was custom-built in studio.
Harry Lawtey, who plays Dylan Rees, noted that while the town is fictional, it was modelled on the actual filming locations. He described the historic marshland as 'breathtakingly stunning' and said nature plays a key role in the characters' lives.
Naomi Yang, who plays DC Jess Deng, stayed in Wales for the full five-week shoot, calling the environment 'so vast' and saying it felt like 'another character in the series'.
