Truth & Treason Review: A Flawed Yet Powerful Anti-Fascist WWII Drama
Truth & Treason Review: A Powerful Anti-Fascist WWII Drama

Based on a true story, the second world war-set feature Truth & Treason dramatises the compelling narrative of German-resistance figure Helmuth Hübener, a Mormon teenager from Hamburg. Portrayed by Ewan Horrocks, Hübener transitions from being a member of the Hitler Youth to distributing leaflets that denounce the Nazi regime, driven by a desire to reveal the truth, as reflected in the film's alliterative title.

Historical Context and Narrative Focus

The film explores Hübener's motivations, partly inspired by his Jewish friend Salomon Schwarz, played by Nye Occomore, who is shipped off to Auschwitz. However, Salomon's role is limited, with more screen time dedicated to Hübener's chief antagonist, Gestapo officer Erwin Mussener, portrayed by Rupert Evans. Mussener is depicted with a nuanced soft side and personal tragedies, adding depth to his character before his brutal actions unfold.

Acting and Dialogue Excellence

Despite potential criticisms, the acting in Truth & Treason is notably strong, particularly from Horrocks and Evans. Their climactic conversation about truth, literary skill, and sacrifice delivers a Death and the Maiden-like intensity, enhanced by persuasive and punchy dialogue. The final twenty minutes of the film crackle with energy, leading to a satisfying and emotionally wrenching conclusion that reveals the fates of the characters, capped by a poignant vintage quote from Alexei Navalny.

Flaws and Strengths

It would be easy to dismiss this film as a maladroit Christian saviour-touting melodrama, especially given its backing by faith-based outfit Angel Studios, known for projects like the QAnon-adjacent Sound of Freedom. Yet, Truth & Treason rises above these concerns with its heartfelt execution and timely anti-fascist message. The film is flawed but feels genuine, with its heart in the right place, making it a welcome addition in these dark times.

Truth & Treason is available for streaming on Prime Video starting from 20 April, offering viewers a thought-provoking look at resistance and truth during one of history's darkest periods.
