True Crime Series 'Hashtag Homicide' Explores Social Media Murders

A forthcoming true crime series is set to probe the intersection of social media and homicide, revealing how virtual platforms can become arenas for crime, detection, and justice. Titled True Crime: Hashtag Homicide, the eight-episode programme will stream on U, exploring cases where digital footprints play a pivotal role.

Series Overview

The series delves into the dark nexus of online activity and violent crime. Each episode investigates a murder, examining evidence, crime scenes, and social media trails. As the synopsis states: "From online sleuths and perpetrators caught on camera to private messages and dating apps." Detectives, journalists, social media experts, and family members share how crimes were solved and preventive measures developed.

Notable Cases

One episode focuses on travel influencer Gabby Petito, who vanished in 2021 during a cross-country road trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. The 22-year-old documented her journey on Instagram, and her posts, along with the online van-life community, enabled armchair detectives to trace her final movements. The case went viral, illustrating how social media intertwines with true crime.

Another episode examines the 2014 murder of 14-year-old Breck Bednar, lured to his death by Lewis Daynes. The pair met through an online gaming platform, and the friendship turned deadly. The episode reviews grooming messages, server chats, and call records, showing how virtual manipulation led to real-world tragedy.

A third episode covers the murders of Ana Abulaban and Rayburn Cardenas Barron in San Diego in 2021. The perpetrator, Ali Abulaban (known as "JinnKid" on TikTok), was Ana's estranged husband. His online persona and digital trail became central to the case, where internet notoriety collided with real-world violence.
