Troye Sivan risked incurring the wrath of Anna Wintour on Monday when he arrived at the 2026 Met Gala in New York City. The 30-year-old hitmaker, who resides in Melbourne, walked the red carpet at The Metropolitan Museum of Art sporting a pair of blue jeans.
Despite being dressed by Prada, the singer committed a significant fashion faux pas in the eyes of the former Vogue editor-in-chief by donning such a casual clothing item at the prestigious event. Wintour has long held strong opinions about where jeans are appropriate and where they are not, previously stating that there are certain places where wearing jeans can be seen as disrespectful.
A former assistant to the fashion mogul, now 76, once revealed in an interview that Wintour had banned jeans and sneakers from her office entirely. 'The one unspoken rule, it was never explicitly said, but in Anna's office is that there are no jeans and no sneakers,' Sammi Tapper told Vogue in April.
In 2019, during the Vogue video series Go Ask Anna, Wintour clarified that she does not dislike jeans but believes there is a time and place for them. 'Looking at all those models on the street wearing their jeans and t-shirts they all look fantastic,' she said, but added that they are not always 'the most respectful choice.' She advised against wearing jeans to formal occasions, particularly at Buckingham Palace and the White House. 'You should definitely not wear jeans when you're meeting your future in-laws for the first time,' she also stressed.
Nevertheless, Troye did not seem bothered by Wintour's opinions on the fashion item, as he proudly rocked his blue denim at the night of nights for celebrity fashion. He paired the jeans with a white button-up shirt and a black tie, topped with a faux fur-lined coat.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit, commonly known as the Met Gala, takes place on the first Monday in May each year. The theme for the 2026 event—widely considered the biggest night in celebrity red carpet fashion—is Costume Art, while the dress code is Fashion Is Art.
Meanwhile, Wintour stepped out wearing Chanel and Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery. The dress code calls on A-list attendees to explore how designers use the human body as a blank canvas. Leading the charge is a powerhouse trio of co-chairs: Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams, joining forces with Vogue's global editorial director Anna Wintour to oversee fashion's biggest night. It is the first time tennis superstar Venus has co-chaired the gala. Nicole previously co-chaired the star-studded event in 2003 and 2005, while Beyonce was an honorary chair in 2013.
The New York City museum will pair historical and contemporary garments from the Costume Institute for the exhibition, which will be loosely divided into three categories: the classical and the nude body, ageing and pregnant bodies, and the anatomical body. The exhibit—set to unveil the Met's sprawling new Condé Nast Galleries—has been made possible by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez, who are the lead sponsors and honorary co-chairs. French luxury fashion house Yves Saint Laurent is also sponsoring the exhibit.
