Dominic Sessa transforms from his breakthrough role in Alexander Payne's The Holdovers to portray a teenage Anthony Bourdain in the forthcoming A24 biopic Tony. Based on Bourdain's bestselling book Kitchen Confidential, the film is a striking summertime coming-of-age comedy-drama. It features Bourdain's serious soul searching as he masquerades as a writer while learning to cook under the tutelage of his head chef, played by Antonio Banderas. The bond between the two is phenomenal, with Banderas delivering a tender and powerful performance.
Leo Woodall's execution of foul-mouthed restaurant worker Sal is remarkable, injecting humor alongside Stavros Halkias. Emilia Jones stars as Nancy, the intense romance providing a tender counterpoint. The cinematography by Michael Bauman captures the balmy, seaside town atmosphere.
Authentic Portrayal
23-year-old Sessa embodies Bourdain's characteristics, from his lanky physical stance to his unabashed bravado. The film opens with Bourdain's own quote describing himself as 'a spoiled, miserable, narcissistic, self-destructive, and thoughtless young lout, badly in need of a good a**-kicking'. Sessa flawlessly portrays the frustration and discovery of his obsession with food.
Verdict and Release
Director Matt Johnson strikes perfection in a copy-and-paste biopic era, with an unpretentious approach that showcases human flaws. The film puts naysayers at ease with a sensitive and gritty approach. The final scene features a cameo from Bourdain's closest friend, French chef Eric Ripert, the last person to see Bourdain alive.
