As a budding historian specialising in 20th-century history, particularly the Second World War, I am no stranger to war documentaries. So when World War II with Tom Hanks was announced, I felt compelled to share my thoughts. Tom Hanks presents this Sky History docuseries, and he is more than qualified, having acted in several war films and helped create Band of Brothers. His genuine passion for the subject lends a sincere tone to the storytelling.
A Familiar Story, Told Clearly
Although Hanks narrates, experts, authors, and historians guide the narrative. His presence is not deeply felt throughout each episode. The series recounts events in a clear, easy-to-follow manner, making it ideal for those new to WW2 history. It is thorough without being complicated. However, after watching the first three episodes, I did not learn anything new; it serves as a refresher of well-known events.
Exceptional Visuals Set It Apart
What truly sets this series apart is its use of video, audio, and imagery. I have never seen a documentary depict WW2 so vividly. As a historian who wrote a dissertation on Hitler's imagery, I have reviewed more archival material than most. The footage paints a powerful visual picture, surpassing typical documentaries. The timely release also serves as a poignant reminder of war's tragedy.
World War II with Tom Hanks premieres on Sky History on Tuesday, May 26. The first three episodes air on May 26, followed by weekly double-bills. Episodes are available on demand after each premiere. Sky History is accessible on Sky, Virgin, Now, and HISTORY Play.
