The gripping thriller Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, has been added to Amazon Prime Video. The 2013 film follows the true story of an American merchant sailor held captive off the coast of Somalia in 2009.
Hanks portrays Captain Richard Phillips, who is tasked with steering the unarmed cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama through pirate-infested waters. Despite safety measures, the vessel is intercepted by two skiffs carrying Somali pirates, leading to a tense standoff between Phillips and their leader Muse, played by Barkhad Abdi.
The film was a box office success, earning $218.8 million globally against a $55 million budget. It holds a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics and audiences praising the performances and intensity. One viewer described it as "high-anxiety from start to finish," while another called it "absolutely perfect."
Captain Phillips earned four Golden Globe nominations and nine British Academy Film Award nominations, with Abdi winning Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTAs. It also received six Academy Award nominations. The film is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
